If you’re looking to grow some delicious herbs and vegetables to use as seasonings for your dishes, this is the article for you. Below are some simple ways to grow 5 types of herbs right at home without using seeds:
- How to Grow Garlic
Garlic grows from the cloves you have. Each clove will develop into a new garlic plant. Garlic is an essential seasoning in every Vietnamese meal. You can easily grow garlic at home using just a small container of water.
Growing Garlic in Water: When garlic starts to sprout, place the sprouted cloves in a container of clean water. Wait until the shoots grow taller, then plant them in a small pot with soil. Make sure to cover the cloves with soil and place them in a cool, shaded area for a quicker “harvest” day.

- How to Grow Lemongrass
First, prepare a few fresh lemongrass stalks with intact bases, cut off the tops, and soak the whole stalks in a container of clean water.
Next, place the container in a dry, cool place with a bit of sunlight, like by a window or in your garden.
Lemongrass takes about 2 days to root and up to a week after soaking to start growing leaves. After about 2 weeks, the lemongrass stalks will develop many leaves and almost fully grow.
Finally, transfer the lemongrass to a small pot with soil, and after about 3 weeks of planting, you can start using it. Don’t forget to change the water regularly (about every 2 days) to prevent wilting.

- How to Grow Green Onions
When you first buy green onions, keep the roots and about 3 cm of the fresh top part intact. Then, place them in a glass container with clean water and soak in a bright, sunny spot.
Soaking Green Onions in Water: After about 3-4 days, the green onions will quickly grow fresh green leaves. You can cut the leaves for seasoning and keep the roots and 3 cm of fresh top to regrow for future use. It’s very simple!
- How to Grow Ginger
To choose fresh ginger for planting, select pieces that are plump with a strong flavor and aroma.
Next, break off about 3 cm of the freshest part of the ginger carefully, then dry the pieces. Once the ginger is dried, soak it in warm water overnight and then plant it in a pot with well-draining soil.
Growing Ginger: Place the pot in a warm spot with sunlight. After about 20 days of planting, the ginger will start to sprout if you water it regularly (2-3 times a day). When the ginger develops many leaves, you can water the leaves and the root thoroughly, instead of just spraying water on the surface. Ginger takes about 1-2 months to harvest, so be patient and wait until it grows to around 60-120 cm!

- How to Grow Shallots

To get fresh and well-rooted shallots, choose bulbs that are fresh with intact roots and without any bruises.
Growing Shallots in Water: Keep the root base intact and soak it in clean water. After about 7 days, the roots will grow longer and turn a light white color.
In addition to growing shallots in water, you can also plant the roots in a pot with soil. Make sure to choose well-draining soil with suitable pH levels.
