How to Grow Fresh Green Onions at Home Without Soil or Pots: 4 Simple Methods for Everyone to Succeed!
Do you want fresh green onions to use in your cooking right at home but hesitate because you don’t have soil or pots? Check out these four incredibly simple methods to grow green onions. Anyone can succeed with these tips!
1. Growing Green Onions Using Egg Cartons
Prepare 5 paper egg cartons, spray them with water to moisten them, and stack them on top of each other. Create a small hole in each egg compartment to allow water to penetrate evenly and place a dried onion bulb in each hole (with the roots facing down). Keep these cartons in a cool, shaded place and water regularly to maintain moisture. To avoid water spilling out, you can place a plastic or foam sheet under the cartons.
Tip: Choose clean onions without any signs of mold or damage to increase the chances of sprouting.
2. Using Banana Stems to Grow Green Onions
If you have banana trees in your garden, use them to grow green onions! Drill holes in the banana stem and place an onion bulb in each hole (one bulb per hole), making sure the roots are in contact with the banana stem. In about 20–25 days, you can harvest green onions from your banana stem.
3. Hydroponic Method for Growing Green Onions
Choose healthy green onions with dark green stems and white roots about 2 to 7 cm long. Gently place the roots in a cup of water, ensuring the roots are fully submerged. Place the cup in a well-lit area but avoid direct sunlight. Change the water twice a day to prevent the onions from rotting.
With this method, you can harvest green onions in about two weeks. When cutting the green onions, leave the roots to reuse for the next planting cycle. To stimulate faster growth, you can add a bit of organic fertilizer to the water every three harvests.
4. Growing Green Onions in a Plastic Basket
Materials Needed:
- A plastic basket
- A plastic bag
- A small plastic bottle
- A piece of soft wire
- Purple onions
- Potting soil
- Utility knife
- Drill
- Wire cutters
Detailed Instructions for Growing Green Onions in a Plastic Basket:
Step 1: Use the drill to create drainage holes at the bottom of the basket. Use wire cutters to enlarge the plastic strips, forming larger holes in the basket.
Step 2: Use small wire to poke additional holes in the plastic bottle, creating 3-4 rows of holes around the bottle.
Step 3: Place the plastic bag inside the plastic basket to fit snugly. Place the perforated plastic bottle in the center of the basket, then fill the basket with potting soil around the bottle.

Step 4: Use the utility knife to trim any excess plastic bag material to match the shape of the basket. Plant the purple onions in the soil, ensuring that the soil covers about 1/3 to 1/2 of the bulb.
Note: You can cut off the top of the purple onion to encourage sprouting.
Step 5: Water the bottle in the center, then cap it. Water will slowly seep out through the holes, keeping the soil moist and nourishing the purple onions. Make sure the bottle is always full of water and mist the soil surface as needed.
You can place this basket of green onions on the ground or hang it as you wish. The onions will grow well, providing fresh green onions year-round.
